About this artwork
"In this piece, the focus shifts to the intimate intersection of human survival and environmental stewardship. The figure, bent nearly double, is captured in the humble act of picking up a waste soda can from the ocean shore, a detail that transforms the massive sack from a mere burden into a vessel of reclamation. By contrasting the heavy, impasto-thickened form against the ethereal lavender-blues of the coast, I aim to highlight the quiet dignity… of this 'invisible' labor. The hidden face and reflective shoreline suggest a universal rhythm—one where the weight of our waste is met by the tireless resilience of the human spirit."
Gigi Miahs, born and based in Nairobi, Kenya, is a painter who predominantly uses oils, incorporating beeswax, as well as charcoal and pastels, with formal training from the Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts. His technique fuses traditional-classical and modern styles, masterfully blending light, color, and intricate impasto knife-work to create both depth and tactile allure. Each painting is an immersive, impressionistic scene that draws the viewer in, conveying moments of reflection, exploration, and profound wonder at the beauty and meaning of existence.
