About this artwork
In this contemporary still life, I explore the quiet poetry of light and shadow through the use of chiaroscuro. A bowl filled with deep violet plums rests on a softly draped white cloth, while scattered fruit and leaves introduce movement and a natural rhythm within the composition.
For me, directional light is a tool that sculpts form and reveals volume. The contrast between cool whites and luminous purples enhances depth and allows the color to… resonate with richness and intensity. Expressive brushwork and palette knife textures bring vitality and immediacy to the surface, while the restrained background keeps the focus on the dialogue between light and color.
By combining the classical tradition of still life with a contemporary painterly language, I use chiaroscuro not only to model form but to create atmosphere and emotion. This work reflects my fascination with the quiet elegance and inner balance found in simple, everyday objects.
Gulshaba Abbasova, an Azerbaijani painter based in Baku, works primarily with oil on canvas and honed her skills through private mentorship and persistent self-study. She employs layered brushstrokes and a delicate interplay of vibrant colors, light, and shadow to create depth and serenity, often depicting themes of nature and introspection. Her paintings radiate warmth, tranquility, and invite viewers to discover beauty and inner peace in the quiet moments of life.
