About this artwork
Amazonas in danger, we see an indigenous woman from the Amazon who watches with sadness and resignation as her habitat burns and her community loses its ancestral livelihood.
In 2020, when thousands of hectares were consumed by fire in Brazil, we became aware of how, from this specific event, we can also deduce that the rest of us, by action or omission, contributed to a disaster that will have consequences for future generations.
Gustavo de León, born in Montevideo on October 23, 1956, is a Uruguayan painter. I practiced different disciplines of painting and sculpture in my watercolorist mother's workshop throughout my teenage years. In 1974, she moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to work in a family business. In 2002, her work in the hotel industry took her to Machu Picchu, Cusco, Peru, alternating with trips to the Amazon rainforest and Lima. She returned to Buenos Aires in 2019, where she studied Fine Arts and began a sustained production of oil paintings on canvas, exploring different styles and materials. Between 2023 and 2025, she participated in several group exhibitions in Buenos Aires, Paris, Amsterdam, and Punta del Este, Uruguay.
