About this artwork
battle
I grew up in a time and world where there would never again be war or totalitarian barbarity. In my mind, peace and democracy were unshakeable cornerstones of my thinking and political consciousness.
In attitudes and conversations, non-violence and peace on earth were invoked, which I found to be a peculiar contradiction in light of the worldwide warlike and violent conflicts.
When war came to Central Europe in the mid-1990s, I tried,… and found it appropriate, to work with artistic means on the contradiction: wishing for peace - waging war.
After 10 years of searching and experimenting, and reading countless military, historical and sociological treatises, the battle images were created starting in 2005.
Hanno Otten works as a painter, photographer, draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor, possessing a broad artistic background with a focus on color theory and visual perception. He is known for his camera-less, abstract color experiments on light-sensitive paper and his intensive exploration of the precision and complexity of visual languages. His works invite profound reflection and convey a compelling blend of rational clarity and poetic emotionality.
