About this artwork
Time and light create beautiful colours and decorations in enchanted places. The photograph ‘The Red Door’ was taken in the early hours of the morning in May 2010. Until 1994, the Soviet army used the buildings of the Beelitz Sanatorium as a sanatorium. When they were handed over, they were in a unique, original condition. If they had been put to immediate further use, this condition would have been preserved.
Hassan J. Richter is a photographer raised in the former GDR, whose formative experiences with social transformation inform his medium and vision. He employs analog and digital medium- and large-format cameras, cultivating a contemplative, almost meditative style that lingers on abandoned places and the silent stories embedded in architecture. Through his masterful use of light and atmosphere, he infuses lost spaces with dignity and poetic resonance, evoking a powerful sense of memory, transition, and human responsibility, inviting viewers to reflect on history, loss, and the potential for creative agency.
