Heimo Schrittwieser (1928-2006), one of the most important Austrian painters of the 20th century, worked with oil, acrylic, mixed media, and lithography. His works, characterized by the concept of "Underlying Realism," reveal the profound connections between humanity and the world in powerful, symbolic images; stylistically, he always remained unique. His art is marked by cyclical themes such as Mount Athos, Turkey, and Venice – with doves as symbols of peace and musicians, Schrittwieser conveys feelings of liberation, joy, and hope, coupled with a deep search for truth and the meaning of human existence.
The works combine realistic depictions with metaphorical layers – a "realism with a second glance." The works have not been publicly exhibited since 2006. The rediscovery of this estate now offers the opportunity to re-appreciate a unique voice within Fantastic Realism and make it accessible to collectors.
