About this artwork
The present work is a portrait of the American writer Willa Cather, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1923 and is considered one of the most important American authors. The serious expression of the sitter is underscored by the deep black background, which makes her appear all the more luminous and compelling.
Henrieke Ribbe

Henrieke Ribbe, born in Hanover in 1979, studied at the HfbK in Hamburg, where she received her diploma in 2005 under Werner Büttner. She now lives and works in Berlin. Ribbe primarily paints portraits, sometimes choosing motifs that are vibrant and colorful, conveying glamour and celebrity. She also paints very personal portraits, including a series of portraits of the staff of the Berlin club "Kater Holzig." In 2019, she created a series of large-format portraits of female artists with their children. These works were featured in the exhibition "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" at the Westwerk gallery in Hamburg. Her work is often biographical, extremely subtle, and meticulously observed. Her pieces have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
