About this artwork
Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, ecstasy and renewal, shares some symbolic characteristics with the figure of Christ in Christianity. Both are associated with rituals that use wine - Dionysus in the context of the Dionysian mysteries and Christ at the Last Supper, where wine is interpreted as his blood. This use of wine symbolizes renewal, community and spiritual connection. There are also thematic similarities in their stories, such as the idea…
of suffering, death and resurrection. Dionysus was killed and reborn in some myths, which is a strong motif of renewal and immortality. Christ's crucifixion and resurrection are central events in Christianity, promising redemption and eternal life. The stickers at the bottom of the image refer to the modern everyday world as a provocative and inspiring contrast.
