About this artwork
In this picture we see on the right the contoured portrait of a young man, on the left the head of an ancient male statue ("Kouros"), above a possibly female contoured portrait in pain or ecstasy. At the bottom of the picture is a hand with a nail, undoubtedly representing the hand of the crucified Christ. I took them from Grünewald's famous Isenheim Altarpiece.
A structure comes into play here that to this day preoccupies me artistically and culturally… philosophically, namely the genealogy of cultural and artistic motifs across time. In this case, the ideal young male god of antiquity (e.g. Adonis), who periodically dies only to be resurrected the next year, symbolizing fertility and salvation. In Christianity, this then became Jesus Christ, who, according to Christian ideas, redeemed humanity with his terrible death and resurrection.
Heribert Heere uses collage, paintings (oil, acrylic, watercolor), digital media, and photography; his artistic development was honed at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and shaped by art historical studies. With sophisticated stylistic pluralism, he combines old and new, representational and abstract, and the trivial with high culture in his works, allowing collage, painting, and montage to flow seamlessly into one another. His works create a poetic tension and invite viewers to reflect on the constant metamorphosis of our culture and to experience the interplay of meanings on an emotional level.
