About this artwork
Is the wrong path the right one? / Será errar o caminho certo?
Based on the surface of the pictorial canvas, my work emerges as a field of sculptural creation, sometimes through the three-dimensional volume of matter, and other times through the simple relief of the line. These characteristics reveal a quality of cross-disciplinary mastery between the realms of drawing, painting, and sculpture.
The pieces, poetically and humorously dramatized by… people, animals, and nature (as well as their respective titles), depict thematic scenes of social criticism and awareness, such as inclusion and biodiversity, explored either through moments from my daily life or experiences from a nostalgically distant past.
« As an artist, it is very enjoyable to try to fulfill myself by creating something new every day. »
Hugo Castilho is a self-taught Portuguese painter who portrays a fantastical universe where he explores reflections of reality through ethical, pedagogical, and humoristic content. He begins his artistic process by contemplating a white canvas on the floor, imagining what it is he wants to create. With a spoon, Castilho starts molding plaster. After it has dried, he gives color to the piece by using enamel paint.
