About this artwork
“Sardine Special: Front Page Catch” is a bold, contemporary still life from my Edible Headlines series — a body of work where everyday food subjects are transformed into visual “headlines” through realism and layered meaning.
Painted in acrylics over real newspaper, this work features a group of sardines rendered with striking clarity and detail. Their silvery bodies, subtle color shifts, and natural textures stand out against the printed surface… beneath, where fragments of text remain visible and active. The newspaper functions as both material and metaphor, referencing the fleeting nature of news while preserving a timeless culinary subject.
Sardines, humble yet culturally rich, become the protagonists of this composition — elevated to front-page status and inviting reflection on food, tradition, and attention. The square 30 × 30 cm format gives the painting a strong visual presence, making it suitable as a statement piece or as part of a curated collection.
