About this artwork
During our vacation at Travemünde Beach, we often found ourselves taking evening strolls along the promenade. Right next to our hotel, the Trave River flows into the Baltic Sea, and from there, ferries regularly departed for Denmark. A tricky entry and exit for ferries, one that is usually managed with the help of a pilot.
On a particularly mild summer evening, we watched a brightly lit TT-Line ferry leave the Trave estuary and head for the open… sea. The contrasts of this scene—the brightly lit ferry against the pitch-black sea and the shadows of the beach chairs in the foreground, which in the darkness seemed almost like meditating monks—fascinated me deeply. Inspired by this moment, I first created a photograph, which I then artistically interpreted in this expressive and Fauvist acrylic painting.
