About this artwork
(This is a detail from the painting Lollipop) When I was a kid all the phones were attached to walls by phone cords. And there was a special place out on Long Island called the Lollipop Farm. My parents would take my sister and me out there on the Sunday drive. It had goats, ducks, ponies, and a train just for kids that ran all through the Lollipop Farm. My life got somewhat derailed after that and a kind of trainwreck; self imposed, followed. And… then years later, late in my life, my wife, Lolly, showed up. Joy and wonder returned and later, I painted this painting. To me it sums up the feelings of this childhood place and then, my return, in a way, to it. AND...what I like about this painting is that is incorporates layers upon painted over layers, hinting at something more back there to see.
To say that I, J Fitzpatrick am a self-taught painter with formal training is to miss the point. Yes, I have had formal training. yes, I am by nature an auto didact but for me painting is more experiential than an, assertive initiated act. For me painting is intentionaly not doing or thinking anything. It is sitting waiting quietly for what I can best describe as a visit from something outside myself. It may be there right away or it might not come for days. And then suddenly it is there-- an image that had not been there moments before and I go with it.
