About this artwork
This painting from the first Storybook pages series. They are featured in the accompanying video in the store front window of the AFA Gallery in Scranton PA. They are works of acrylic paint on paper framed behind a sheet of clear acrylic. (The second series are on canvas). They portray figures as they would appear as printed lines on a page but now as characters in an imagined narrative; a calligraphy of people we have met or may come to meet and… know. The work depicts two halfs: one on the left, one on the right as pages would appear in an open book. Words are replaced by figures. My hope is that their stories begin upon viewing.
To say that I, J Fitzpatrick am a self-taught painter with formal training is to miss the point. Yes, I have had formal training. yes, I am by nature an auto didact but for me painting is more experiential than an, assertive initiated act. For me painting is intentionaly not doing or thinking anything. It is sitting waiting quietly for what I can best describe as a visit from something outside myself. It may be there right away or it might not come for days. And then suddenly it is there-- an image that had not been there moments before and I go with it.
