About this artwork
This is piece is a representation of a member of the Lawa tribe. The Lawa were the original indigenous people of Northern Thailand and have been here for many centuries. As is the case for all of the hill tribes here in Thailand, their way of life and numbers are on the decline as modernization, urbanization and other issues challenge their growth and sustainability.
My hope is that if I can create and affect awareness, even in just one person,… then maybe that one person can affect others to bring attention to the plight of all of these beautiful people.

- Works on commission
Born and trained in Los Angeles, Jameel Haiat indulges his craft in Chiang Mai, producing paper and cardboard mixed media pieces. His technique marries the abstract with sculpture and collage, tearing to deconstruct and reassembling to create anew. Haiat's art explores the raw intensities of pain, trauma, and violence, contemplating the dynamic relationship between artist and creation. In every striking piece, he seeks to evoke emotional responses tied to viewers' personal experiences.
