About this artwork
curiously, this painting is complex both in its origins and in its construction and is inspired by earlier sketches and a painting composed on a similar basis. The structure of the painting, carefully considered, took many years to develop. The artist first created smaller studies to work from, building the composition through different stages. The two children, silhouettes facing the light and the sea, was previously used in a slightly different… construction. The sea here in this painting rises slowly, the waves shimmering in the soft light. The paint is applied mainly with a brush but also using a knife to shape the layers giving depth and movement. it is a painting that seeks harmony and calm.
« Intimate, with an eye on the privacy of everyday life enhanced through color and silence. A calm and restful life. »
James MacKeown is an award-winning figurative artist living in France whose paintings are featured annually in solo exhibitions nationally, as well as in England, Ireland, and Switzerland. Through his art, he endeavors to convey the sublime in the intimacy of everyday and private life. The apparent improvisation in his works is in reality the result of an extreme and refined elaboration; the palette of colors meticulously constructed with soft gradients combined with a gentle touch. As such, MacKeown identifies as a "painter of intimacy". While he occasionally depicts surrealist subjects, they also follow his particular vision and philosophy of daily life.
