There is always something extraordinary about a port. A haven of peace where boats seek calm away from the wrath of a wild sea!
Of course, this painting is not about a wild sea. the aim was to try to convey the calm tranquility of the small port, with its quiet port life and picturesque buildings. The colors are warm but subdued, the moment of total peace early in the morning before the wind picks up and the rigging slams in chorus on the water.…
The painting is intentionally discreet in detail, which has taken, surprisingly, a considerable amount of time!

James MacKeown is an award-winning figurative artist living in France whose paintings are featured annually in solo exhibitions nationally, as well as in England, Ireland, and Switzerland. Through his art, he endeavors to convey the sublime in the intimacy of everyday and private life. The apparent improvisation in his works is in reality the result of an extreme and refined elaboration; the palette of colors meticulously constructed with soft gradients combined with a gentle touch. As such, MacKeown identifies as a "painter of intimacy". While he occasionally depicts surrealist subjects, they also follow his particular vision and philosophy of daily life.
