The work is process art and consists of a surface made up of robust wood parts put together in form of a near square form, and which is charred. On top of this surface are small parts of raw wood split among each other, which are nailed to the charred surface of wood. The work is also Picturesque art through the split wood elements. William Gilpin, one of the Picturesque theoreticians of the late 18th century in garden design sees roughness and… ruggedness as ensigns of the Picturesque, which can be found in this work in the split wood elements. Other followers of the Picturesque in the art of the 20th and 21st centuries are Serra or Smithson.
Jan de Weryha is an award-winning sculptor with a master's degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Through process art and picturesque art, he marries wood splitting into surprising forms and textures. With his unique style, he explores the deep materiality of his sculptures and reliefs. His art is a powerful expression of his encounter with the material—rich, honest, and full of emotion.
