About this artwork
Work made for the Benetton Foundation exhibition 'When the Globe is Home' at Gallerie delle Prigioni, Treviso, Italy.
The work addresses the globalisation of the individual. The technological development of means for communication,
from telephone, radio, television to the internet, has democratised these means and made it possible for the individual
to reach out across the globe to present and market themselves. Simultaneously, this has resulted… in a common and
cliché visual language, a common aspiration to be happy, wealthy and carefree, with any form of dissent and discussion
being rendered innocuous as it is played out in cyberspace. The individual can now be perceived as a set of data with
economic value. The exploitation or monetization of these data takes place involuntarily, via tracking and analysis of
online and offline behaviour but also intentionally, by use of social media and ‘selfie-culture’.

In 2010, he won first prize (shared) in the UK National Open Art Competition, with Gavin Turk as jury chairman. His work has been selected for the Threadneedle Prize and the John Moores Prize, and was exhibited at the Liverpool Biennial in 2012.
