About this artwork
This canvas is part of the "CAFÉS" series which in May 2020 has 34 different works. As often the artist retains from these moments the joy of relationships or their serenity.
For its part, the work gives rise to the rebound writing of a poetic text:
"Smile.
In the rising dawn. In the evening which is born. In the song of the wind. In the silence of music by Messiaen. In the souls of Soulage. In the incessant swirls of thoughts. In the fires… of Saint John. Under the ice of the December roads.
Smile.
When the shadow announces incandescent darkness. When the soul bends under the frozen body. When the swallows tag the sky with a strange writing. When the sound of sources fades.
Smile.
At the end of a cafe room pierced with light. In the hollow of the earth when the grass mosses under the stones with derisory inscriptions.
Smile.
In memory of the unchanging flowers. "
« Staying in this delicate in between, located between form and the emotion that it gives birth to. »
Jean-Paul Schmitt is an award-winning French artist who is convinced that painting can confront mystery through form and light, as portrayed through methods other than surrealism and abstraction. Schmitt’s creative process begins with a preliminary study using watercolors, inks, pencils and acrylics. Once the color dynamics have been determined, he moves onto the final medium - thick oil paste on canvas.
