The tree, as a whole or in its individual parts, is a motif that is almost impossible to ignore in the visual arts. Modern photography has only confirmed this; yet even without this modern contribution, the tree remains an indispensable part of the visual arts. This is certainly due to its immense visual appeal, but equally to the profound meaning of its being: as a source of life, as a bridge between earth and sky, as the anchoring of life on our… planet.
For me, the tree exerts a magical attraction – probably quite clearly – almost an obsession. Roots, trunks, and branches are particularly well-suited for monochrome pencil drawings: the reduction of color can be balanced by lines and textures, creating fascinating visual worlds. These depictions, however imaginative they may appear, can never surpass nature itself.
With my tree drawings, I want to pass on this magic and power.
I am a fantasist par excellence (to paraphrase Dalí).
Specific data from my life:
I was born in Cluj-Napoca, studied fine arts for eight years and was subsequently active with my traveling theatre Fabularia until 1989, when I had to leave the country with my family because of my political opposition activities.
We settled in Austria, but in the last ten years my wife and I have settled in Hungary.
I continued my theatre work until 2010, with many performances in Austria and Italy. In the meantime, I wrote a lot – diaries, manuscripts, and books.
Since 2010 I have finally been able to dedicate myself to my calling, which I have cultivated since high school: painting.
I have had exhibitions in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Russia – and last year my first solo exhibition in Cluj-Napoca, my hometown, which I left 35 years ago.
