About this artwork
This painting is part of artist's "Maroon Fire" series, where he explored the fragile balance between destruction and renewal. jemal said that he was inspired by a visit to Caernarfon Castle in Wales where light emerging through chaos — how something burning can also illuminate.
Through layered textures and contrasts of deep blues, fiery yellows, and earthy tones, he captured an atmosphere that feels both turbulent and hopeful. The abstracted forms… suggest a marine landscape under a glowing sky, but artist's intention was not to depict a place — it’s to express an inner landscape, a state of emotion and transformation.
"When I paint, I work intuitively, allowing color and movement to lead me. Each brushstroke is a response to energy rather than to form, and this process gives the painting its sense of rawness and unpredictability"
Framed size: 59.5 (W) x 56.5 (H) x 3(D) cm / 23.4" (W) x 22.2" (H) x 1.2" (D)
The painting is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
« I don't know who guides my brush when I paint. Sometimes I feel like an otherworldly force takes over. »
Jemal Gugunava, a Georgian-born artist trained at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, is currently based in the UK and Prague, Czechia.
He paints whatever captures his attention, enjoying a moment — urban landscapes, nature, intriguing objects, human faces, and conceptual figurative compositions. Despite the diversity of his subject matter, all Jemal’s works share an internal unity that goes far beyond simple stylistic continuity. This coherence comes not only from his distinctive brushwork, but also from the emotion and persistent philosophical undercurrent that runs through his paintings. He allows geometric lines and clear contours to emerge almost instinctively—a fusion of deeply rooted Eastern European visual traditions with the vibrant, angular elements of abstract art and postmodernism, where different artistic languages often intersect and coexist.
His credo: Paint what you love — let neither trend nor anyone dictate.
