About this artwork
Medium: Filler, oak
The works in this series are made by pressing down the filler vertically until it reaches a depth of 6mm.
As the title indicates it is supposed to resemble chewing gums pressed down on the pavement. Among other things, the work deals with antisocial behaviour as a form of a subconscious, or involuntary, but nevertheless subversive, response to an alienated position.
Press is a compilation of works made by pressing down the… filler with a horizontal plane, thus expanding it outwards.
Reminiscent of Richard Serra's Verb List I try to use simple and clearly defined actions to shape the filler in my works. This way there is always non-cognitive aspects of the production process.

Johan Söderström is a nationally-distinguished Norwegian painter. His works consist of layers of filler where various fields are laid beside each other, like pieces in a puzzle, and he uses his unique technique to emphasize cracks, textures and other aspects the material's own history. He primarily explores the theme of human alienation, and aims to ensure that his aesthetic can be perceived in ways simple enough to diminish the distance between viewer and work.
