As shown on the images this work is made by making imprints with a paper cup from one fixed point beside the frame. Reaching as far I as I could over the surface the imprints organically form a half-circle.
Paper Cups a series of paintings with imprints from regular paper cups. The kind you get from fast food places, and the kind that often is used by people begging in the streets. The series is about the disparity of economic… resources.
Begging, an expression of the most precarious vulnerability is man’s most profound condition. We need others to exist. It is a gesture that expresses the truth about our position. Entirely subject to a potentially indifferent world. Begging tells something about money. We have an economic relationship with reality. We are endlessly exposed to the contingency of life, and to those who embrace the raw power of injustice. Begging, and giving without compensation and conditions, is a subversive act.
« I am interested in process-based painting, and the profound solitude of the human mind. While exploring one, I sometimes try to formulate something about the other, and how it affects our relationship with the outside world. »
Johan Söderström is a nationally-distinguished Norwegian painter. His works consist of layers of filler where various fields are laid beside each other, like pieces in a puzzle, and he uses his unique technique to emphasize cracks, textures and other aspects the material's own history. He primarily explores the theme of human alienation, and aims to ensure that his aesthetic can be perceived in ways simple enough to diminish the distance between viewer and work.
