I created this work by drawing concentric lines radiating from the center toward the edges of the panel. The lines produce an illusory depth, suggesting movement inward. Because the drawing tool has a fixed width, the spaces between the lines gradually narrow toward the center, converging not into a single point but into an undefined dark form.
Human perception has limited resolution. We cannot perceive beyond certain… scales or distances, and although technology extends these limits, they still define our relation to reality. Perception itself may be understood as a hallucination constructed by the mind—a fabrication shaped through language. The illusion of coherence is strongest at the center of attention, obscuring material reality.
What remains hidden may not be reality itself, but the point where language loses its ability to describe it. At extreme scales, boundaries dissolve, and without distinction, language ceases to function.
« I am interested in process-based painting, and the profound solitude of the human mind. While exploring one, I sometimes try to formulate something about the other, and how it affects our relationship with the outside world. »
Johan Söderström is a nationally-distinguished Norwegian painter. His works consist of layers of filler where various fields are laid beside each other, like pieces in a puzzle, and he uses his unique technique to emphasize cracks, textures and other aspects the material's own history. He primarily explores the theme of human alienation, and aims to ensure that his aesthetic can be perceived in ways simple enough to diminish the distance between viewer and work.
