About this artwork
The canonical child, a Western stereotype of beauty and innocence, appears running in a chaotic environment. This is a metaphor for the cultural intersections and asymmetries of our contemporary society. The modes of pictorial enunciation accompany and seek to enhance these contrasts: while the child's head and face are treated hyperrealistically in oil, the body and surroundings are expressionist, painted in acrylic with a palette knife and bare… brushstrokes, composed with a highly saturated palette.
Juan Balaguer, a graduate in Fine Arts with 25 years of professional experience, uses the medium of painting and drawing. By transforming photographic images into paintings, he seeks to highlight hidden meanings through different techniques and styles: oil for naturalistic representation, acrylic and enamel for textures and materials. His works, a reflection of his everyday experience and autobiography, convey criticism and reflection on the stereotypes and desires colonized by advertising.
