About this artwork
Heartbreak dahlias embody the intimate contradiction of humankind: a beauty that exists only on the edge of wounding. They speak of the nobility of those who continue to love despite the wear and tear, the silent dignity of those who move forward with a fragility they don't show. Their symbolism reminds us that strength is never pure, that it is born from an accepted flaw, from a feeling too profound not to cause pain. They express the emotion that… overflows the ordinary—this love that both uplifts and fractures, this fidelity to the impulses of the heart even when they tear at you. In this name resonates a human truth: what truly touches leaves a tangible trace, and what is sincere always carries a touch of sorrow. Heartbreak dahlias do not celebrate pain; they simply illuminate its nobility: that of feeling fully, whatever the cost.
Julie Balsaux, a visual artist based in Brittany, works with drawing, sculpture, installation, and sound, drawing inspiration from reading and lived experiences. Her practice, fragmentary and constantly evolving, weaves together materials, narratives, and emotions in a dialogue, prioritizing circulation over completion. Driven by a deep attentiveness to others, she seeks to challenge assumptions and create spaces for encounter, where the imagination becomes a critical tool, carrying tensions and emotions that are both fragile and powerful.
