About this artwork
An emblematic building in the history of Belgium, the main pavilion of the Afrika Museum originally housed the royal collections from the colonial period in the Belgian Congo. Today, this memorial institution with a painful and bloody past attempts to didactically rethink the complex link that unites the Congolese and Belgian people and their heritage after the passage of King Leopold, and to cautiously heal the open wounds left by the atrocities… committed at the time. The wise tranquility of the perfect reflection of the architecture in the large ornamental pond of its garden poetically counterbalances a place with a charged atmosphere but necessary for understanding the past.
Julien VANDANJON-RANCOULE is a multidisciplinary artist, with foundations in drawing, photography and documentary filmmaking. Mastering graphic design and photography techniques, he uses his art as a form of therapy and activism. His works, although calming and decorative on the outside, convey deeper emotions and complex social messages.
