About this artwork
Amelia Earhart sat behind the controls of her plane with confidence and self-assurance - in a world that wanted to keep women on the ground in every way. Her flights were more than records - they were messages: women should pursue paths that had previously only been open to men.
In a similar way, Louise Bourgeois campaigned in the art world to ensure that women became visible, that their work was taken seriously, and that they occupied spaces that… had long been denied to them.
Karin Schäfer dedicates some of her SEAmaps to special people: courageous and curious people who have moved the world. This one tells of the last flight of the aviation pioneer Amelie Earhart, a trailblazer and role model for many women of future generations. The red line in her hand connects the stations of her last journey, but even more: it connects the past and the future, hope and responsibility. This line represents the trace she left behind.
« Wanderlust and curiosity drive me on and the only way not to get lost is to survey the imaginary world. I am the cartographer of our longing places. »
In the SEAmaps, Schäfer's love of the sea, her collection of old land and sea maps, her fascination for ships, containers and ports are combined with her love of travel and the joy of "getting lost" - in foreign places, past times, somewhere between cities, countries, islands and oceans.
Her central approach is collage - dismantling, assembling, combining elements from other contexts and integrating them into new perspectives, scenes and actions.
