Meineszlaan Chestnut in Bronze.
This 100 x 100 cm mixed media painting is an ode to the beautiful old chestnut trees that adorn Burgemeester Meineszlaan in Rotterdam — the avenue where I live.
The work is based on a photo I took this spring of the impressive chestnut tree in front of our house. Sadly, these centuries-old trees are slowly disappearing. Every year we lose a few to disease, and although new ones are planted, every loss feels like… a loss. These trees are not only breathtakingly beautiful but also define the character of our avenue.
With this work, I wanted to honor this tree—captured in the fresh green of spring, but painted in the warm bronze tones of autumn. A reflection on beauty, change, and the cycles of nature.
Materials: Digitally edited photo, oil paint, oil pastel, gel medium and satin varnish on linen canvas in a black box frame
Dimensions: 100 x 100cm (without frame) 103x103cm (with frame).

« I combine the digital and tangible, so I combine two worlds together. »
Karin Vermeer is an independent artist who has lived and worked in Rotterdam since 2002. Her works are created by digitally combining and editing photographs and paintings into new, original works of art. Vermeer specializes in portraits created by overlaying and blending four to five different faces, of different race and origin, to create a new, non existing person. The digital images are printed and paint is added to achieve the final result: an attempt to make a digital image tangible once again.
