About this artwork

In 2022, tijdens een wandeling door de heuvels van Keri, Zakynthos, wees onze gastheer ons op iets buitengewoons. "Je moet de oude pijnboom zien," zei hij met een veelbetekenende glimlach.
Toen zagen we hem—een pijnboom zo oud en massief dat zijn takken terugbuigend naar de aarde raakten en dan weer oprezen, alsof elke tak zijn eigen boom was geworden. De architectuur van de natuur op zijn meest wilde en poëtische.
Ik nam die dag tientallen foto's.… Maar pas afgelopen voorjaar riep één beeld me terug naar het atelier. Maandenlang worstelde ik met dit schilderij—op zoek naar dat evenwicht tussen chaos en harmonie, tussen wat ik zag en wat ik voelde.
Soms vergt het meest betekenisvolle werk een gevecht.

Karin Vermeer is an independent artist who has lived and worked in Rotterdam since 2002. Her works are created by digitally combining and editing photographs and paintings into new, original works of art. Vermeer specializes in portraits created by overlaying and blending four to five different faces, of different race and origin, to create a new, non existing person. The digital images are printed and paint is added to achieve the final result: an attempt to make a digital image tangible once again.
