About this artwork
This artwork was created during a deeply transformative period in my life - a time of reclaiming my voice, my truth, and my identity as a woman.
After my husband’s company moved offices, I found an abandoned mass-produced canvas: dusty, forgotten, and discarded. It felt symbolic of what happens when we spend our lives copying others instead of becoming ourselves.
Rather than throwing it away, I transformed it. What was once its weakness became its… power.
The painting began intuitively with melted candle wax poured onto the surface. From the emerging forms, I discovered the image of a woman - almost mermaid-like - rising above big waves that try to silence and pull her under. Despite the force around her, she opens her mouth to speak. Her voice can no longer be suppressed. The dark marks at the bottom symbolize the remnants of old restraints - traces of the forces that once kept her quiet, invisible, and small. They no longer hold her. Only the memory remains.
