About this artwork
This piece was inspired by a flower from my mother’s garden. Painting flowers allows me to explore a wide range of color schemes and focus on enhancing the intricate details that make each bloom unique. I intentionally used a background of pixel-like squares to create a visual and conceptual contrast between the organic softness of the flower and the rigid geometry of digital imagery. This interplay speaks to the tension—and harmony—between nature… and modern technology, and the enduring presence of life amid increasingly artificial surroundings.
Kate Hoyer is an accomplished oil painter with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, known for her unique journey from color-schemed striped drawings to vibrant, commissioned works. She employs stripes and bold, carefully arranged color palettes to redefine familiar subjects—often animals—with expressive, eye-catching patterns. Her technique playfully exaggerates details and infuses each piece with character, continually seeking new moments to reinterpret. Hoyer’s artworks radiate a contagious sense of joy, inviting viewers to experience delight and surprise in every canvas.
