About this artwork
“Blue Moon” marks a time in my art journey of letting go of expectations and influences from others. Yes I was receiving positive feedback on my more representational paintings but I was not painting from my soul. I was quite nervous to show this painting in the beginning but somehow working with the bold colours embolden me and I let go of judgement and opinion. The painting has over 30 layers of oil and cold wax medium. I used frequent compression… and mark-making on each layer which I think contributed to creating interest and depth as well as visual texture. I wanted to create a luminous painting that would move the viewer to feeling a sense of wonder and wellbeing, often how I feel in when I’m in the forest.
Kathy McKnight, a photographer-turned-painter, delves into abstract impressionism through an intriguing dance of oil and cold wax medium. Her style touches on a multi-layered complexity, intricately merging various techniques that echo the captivating light and organic shapes she uncovers in her natural surroundings. Her paintings, deeply rooted in her personal interactions with Mother Nature, evoke a visceral connection, echoing the energy she encounters out in the wild.
