About this artwork
Inspired by my own grandmother — my babushka — this painting honors the quiet resilience of women who endured the unimaginable. She survived World War II, a concentration camp, and the loss of her family. What remained was not only strength, but light.
Through textured surfaces and expressive detail, this series reflects lives shaped by hardship and history. The vibrant headscarf stands in contrast to muted tones — a symbol of cultural identity,… dignity, and perseverance. Beneath the hardness often associated with babushkas lives tenderness and an unbreakable human spirit.
As history echoes across generations, their stories feel urgent. While suffering may repeat itself, so does resilience.
This work is a meditation on survival — and the light that refuses to go out.
Keren Nimmo is a self-taught painter working with oil, acrylic, and mixed media on canvas and wood panel, drawing upon a personal history of migration and resilience. She employs reductive techniques—excavating layers of color to reveal ethereal portraits—balancing abstraction with figuration and pairing vibrant backgrounds against stark black-and-white forms. Her textured surfaces, full of tension and revision, symbolize the layered nature of identity and generational memory. Nimmo’s art radiates empathy and hope, inviting viewers to find connection, resilience, and shared humanity within each expressive, emotionally charged piece.
