About this artwork
A red poppy with delicate, flawless petals blooms above a slightly deformed vase. The uneven, imperfect shape of the vase stands in sharp contrast to the flower’s pure beauty. This dialogue between perfection and imperfection is at the heart of the painting — when something distorted stands beside something beautiful, the light of perfection shines even brighter. Through this simple composition, the artwork reflects the essence of balance and the… quiet poetry of contrast.
Created with authentic materials — Xuan rice paper and ink — the work follows the traditions of Chinese and Japanese painting. Because Xuan paper is delicate, I carefully mount each painting onto an additional layer of paper, a time-honored practice that preserves colors, prevents wrinkling, and prepares the piece for display.
Kseniya Dueva, born in Moldova and trained in both pharmacy and traditional Chinese painting, works primarily with ink and brush on Xuan paper. Her technique fuses the expressive “free brush” (xieyi) style with minimalism and abstract influences, focusing on powerful lines, the interplay of ink and pigment, and the poetic use of empty space. Through her paintings, she evokes a deep sense of presence, stillness, and fleeting beauty—inviting viewers into a silent yet vibrant dialogue with nature and the spirit of each subject.
