About this artwork
Songes is my very first completed work as an artist; it symbolizes the new cycle I was beginning, a cycle in which I wanted to believe in myself and dedicate my life to drawing. Moreover, it is not signed – corvus – my previous artist name for nine years, nor La Baleine & La Corneille, but Lalève.
From childhood, I had this vision of a flying pirate ship, a 17th-century three-masted vessel, surrounded by flying whales. An ode to adventure, to… poetry, to reverie, to the majesty of whales... I longed to set sail as a child, to leave my parents' austere home, and this vision saved me. It was essential for me to capture it in my imagination.
Note: the paper is ivory white (slightly yellow), not pure white as in the scan.
