About this artwork
"The Sixth Sun" does not express only ancient ideas about the world, but proves that they are still applicable to the current historical moment. The Maya sun cannot be called good-natured, it incinerates what he does not like, like a stern sovereign. The Mayans made sacrifices to him to appease him. The period of the "fifth sun" ended in 2012. The very word "Maya" has two meanings: "the source of this world" and "illusory world". Apparently, illusions…
are dispelled, the sun destroys everything that has lost its relevance - according to the predictions of the ancient Mayans. The man sitting in the foreground is the god of the sky and the sun - Tonatiuh. He ruled the fifth era that ended. The artist depicted him by slightly changing his iconography. Usually god was painted as young men with a red complexion. To maintain strength and preserve youth, he must receive the blood of his victims. In the picture, his face is green, this expresses the hope that the sixth sun will be kind.
