Archival pigment print with digital drawing on 305 gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper.
Apothecary presents a paradise made of medication: a prescription for internal perfection. Pills and Rx bottles, multiplied like mass-produced souvenirs, are mirrored and manipulated to enhance their visual symmetry and bright, clean colors. In milky, backlit photographs, prescriptions glow as if in alluring advertisements for a trendy new cosmetic. Vulnerable and… specific rather than cold and generic, Apothecary displays actual prescription bottles printed with the artist’s personal information, as well as intimate touches such as handwriting scrawled on actual prints, or even on archival tissue “overlays” that function as both veils to the prints they cover, and artworks of their own.
Laurie Victor Kay is an accomplished photographer and multi-media visual artist whose interdisciplinary background spans the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College Chicago, and global experiences in art direction and installation. She fuses painting, photography, digital and physical drawing, often layering techniques—like painting over photographs or infusing symmetry with expressive chaos—while embracing bold, saturated colors inspired by nature, especially profound blues. Her work is a vibrant exploration of truth, freedom, imperfection, and mental health, inviting viewers to feel curiosity, resilience, and a deep, hard-won joy.
