About this artwork
This work takes inspiration from Frida Kahlo. A work I did after reading her published autobiography and journal entries. I have always been inspired by her as an artist, person and activist. For this work I didn't want to create from her works, I wanted to create using her as a person, her grief, how she changed and shapeshifted as a person- one day cutting all of her hair off and dressing like a man. I couldn't get the image out of my head and… wanted to do a piece purely for that moment of emotions, including one of her quotes from her journal: " I hope the exit is joyful and I hope never to return"
Lauryn O'Shaughnessy is a painter and digital artist with a background in Design Illustration and Visual/Fine Arts, drawing deeply from her personal journey and experiences in creative spaces. She employs both surreal dreamscapes in her paintings and 90’s Japanese-inspired colors or soft sketches in her digital works, guided by spontaneous yet crisp conceptual ideas. Her art often explores the subtle, overlooked moments of life and human connection, conveying powerful emotions that provoke thought and invite viewers to pause and truly feel—whether the response is comforting or haunting.
