Len Vernaghi painted in watercolor on paper a castle in the historic center of the seaside city of Vasto (Abruzzo, Italy). The Caldoresco castle was built on a pre-existing structure in 1439 by Giacomo Caldor, once he became marquis of Vasto. The construction work was carried out by him to the Sienese engineer Mariano di Jacopo, nicknamed Taccola. In 1464 it sustained a siege that lasted three months by the army of the King of the Kingdom of Naples… Ferdinand I of Aragon against the marquis Antonio Caldora, son of Giacomo. It was partly modified by the Marquis Innico d'Avalos of Aragon: the external part of the fort incorporated and strengthened the pre-existing structure with bulwarks at the corners, one of which is now missing. The Marquis Cesare Michelangelo d'Avalos made other changes to it at the beginning of the 18th century.
Len Vernaghi, originally from Porrentruy but deeply rooted in Italy, is a multidisciplinary person: painter, photographer, designer, textile artist, engraver, sculptor. He stands out for his portable fresco technique, combining traditional pigments with alternative solutions, and uniting contrasting themes and styles. Her works reveal a powerful socio-political commitment, giving voice to frugality, nature, femininity and marginal places, with an atmosphere of wonder derived from her dreamlike subjects.
