REBELLION
The work explores the tension between humanity's destructive presence and nature's resilient strength. Each open wound in the landscape becomes a visible record of the aggression, and iron oxide emerges like blood from the earth, signifying both the damage and the memory of what has been endured. The thorns that sprout from these fractures represent defense and pain: nature manifests itself, alert and conscious, transforming vulnerability… into strength.
From the wound, mutation is born. The earth not only resists: it reorganizes itself, changes, and finds new ways to sustain life. What was a fracture becomes a possibility; what was pain becomes a driving force. Every crack, every rust, every edge, is a reminder that resilience is not passive, but an active process of adaptation and reinvention.

José Leonardo Montiel García (MONTIEL, Cuba, 1985) is a Cuban visual artist whose work is distinguished by its profound exploration of memory, identity, and the social processes that have shaped Cuba in recent decades. His production encompasses painting, drawing, installation (assemblage), and sculpture, also incorporating experimental techniques that expand the traditional boundaries of visual language.
Training
From an early age, he showed an inclination for drawing and visual exploration. He trained at academic art institutions in Cuba, where he developed a solid technical foundation in composition, while also becoming interested in contemporary conceptual approaches. During his student years, his early work revolved around figurative representation, and he participated in several exhibitions and group events.
