About this artwork
In this work, I sought to capture the intensity and dynamism of the sumo world. Using oil and tempera, I shaped every detail to reflect the palpable tension and mutual respect between the wrestlers. The warm tones and carefully placed light accentuate the power and focus of the athletes, giving your space a vibrant energy and a touch of deep-rooted culture. Sumo fight, sumos off balance, man in kimono, semi-nude. The sumos seem to be doing dance… steps, hence my title. The roundness of their shape suits the light well, it is in opposition to the man in kimono who is refereeing the fight. The background is dark in purple-black tones to highlight the plasticity of the skin.
« [I seek to] be free while accessing vulnerability, to call the viewer to that which is intangible. »
Lisbeth Buonanno is an award-winning French artist whose work has been exhibited in Singapore, Paris, and Guangzhou.
