About this artwork
Oedipus confronts the sphinx as a hero, treating it as a monster, trying to force its secrets, mysteries, pushing himself forcefully out of the limits of the human. The consequences will be, as we all know tremendous. Cocteau in his version of the tragedy makes the sphinx fall in love and it is she who confides the secret to her murderer, who, unaware and brutal, defeats her boastfully. The sphinx here represents the mystery that must not be violated,…
the dangerous grace of what cannot and must not be understood. Oedipus, anti-hero, is the one who believes he knows and is only trivializing the immeasurability of the existing.

« My art is a meditative act. My goal is to seek my elevation by depositing the fruits of my inner work on the canvas. »
Lorenzo Sperzaga is an Italian painter whose works have been widely exhibited on a national level. Inspired by the Baroque, his paintings feature subjects with dramatic expressions, and contain symbolism associated with spiritual themes. He also explores the interplay between light and shadow, and the symbolism inherent in both. Sperzaga's artistic process focuses on the 'emotional condition' and concentration. He creates using oils, enamels, and acrylics on canvas.
