About this artwork
Where Dogs Go When They Die explores the question we all have asked, and grief through innocence and imagination. Rather than depicting loss as darkness, the painting reimagines it as a playful, colourful afterlife — a place where dogs run freely, nap in soft grass, and exist without pain.
The bold black outlines and naïve forms echo a child’s drawing style, suggesting that sometimes the purest understanding of loss comes from simplicity. Bright… blues, greens, and warm peach tones create a world that feels alive, whimsical, and safe. Even the red drips — which could suggest sorrow — are softened by the surrounding joy and movement.
Handwritten words scattered across the canvas give the work a diary-like honesty, as if documenting a personal mythology: a heaven built from memory, love, and hope.
At its heart, this piece isn’t about death — it’s about devotion. It asks us to imagine that love doesn’t end, it just changes landscapes.
Louisa Kruger, a self-taught painter from the Overberg, South Africa, works primarily in bold abstraction, channeling her contemporary expressionist roots. She employs intuitive techniques, layering vibrant colors and textures with palette knives and dynamic brushwork, letting each painting evolve organically and instinctively. Her work exudes energy, celebrating emotional freedom and resilience, inviting viewers to rediscover their own fearless curiosity and courage.
