About this artwork
In my series of paintings, "Moi, L 'Afghane (Me, the Afghan)," I explore the complexities of my identity as an Afghan girl born and raised in France. This subseries is a collection of poignant flashbacks that shaped my understanding of self. One painting depicts the moment when a first-grade friend asked me about the color of my skin, highlighting my early awareness of my difference. Another painting captures the discomfort I felt when I realized…
I carried the scent of Afghan spices, a reminder of my heritage that sometimes clashed with my desire to blend in. I painted the conflicting emotions of wanting to distance myself from my mother's language in public, yet finding joy and comfort in speaking Dari and being surrounded by the mountains, symbols of home.

« The universe gifted me a French edge, a Californian dream and some hot boiling Afghan blood and I channel it through my art. »
Manaz Raiszadeh is an artist based in France whose paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in the United States. Referring to herself as an "intuitionist abstract painter", the genesis of her artistic inspiration comes from her parent's tale and her Afghani cultural background. Raiszadeh often depicts houses and villages in her compositions, as she believes that "we can all relate to the place where we are from". She creates using acrylics, pastels, and collage on canvas or wood.
