About this artwork
The Sphinx was on Mount Phikeion, west of Thebes, and killed passing travelers, including, according to some versions, Haimon, the son of Creon. At least in versions from the 6th century BC. BC she poses a riddle to her victims. Those who could not solve the riddle of the Sphinx were strangled by her and then devoured. The riddle in the Greek original was: What is it that is gifted with one voice and will soon be four-legged, two-legged and three-legged?…
A freer, more classic translation into German reads: “What is possible on four feet in the morning, two at noon and three in the evening?” Oedipus solved the riddle whose answer is “man”: As a toddler he crawled on all fours , as an adult he walks on two legs, and in old age he needs a stick as a third leg. When Oedipus gave the correct answer, the Sphinx threw herself from her rock to her death.

Manuella Muerner Marioni was born in Thun, Switzerland, in 1964. She studied art and fashion design at the Neue Kunstschule Zürich (Switzerland). After graduating, she spent time abroad studying art in Vienna, Lisbon, Paris, Spain, South America, and the USA. For seven years, she collaborated with the NIKI DE ST. PHALLE FOUNDATION in Germany, Switzerland, France, and the USA. Her work can be seen regularly in group and solo exhibitions in museums, galleries, and cultural centers in Europe, Asia, and the USA, including the Zhou Brothers Foundation in Chicago, the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art in Las Vegas, and solo exhibitions at the International Museum of Contemporary Art ITALIA ARTE in Turin, as well as Artifact Gallery in New York. The artist regularly participates in major art fairs such as Art San Diego, Art Expo in New York, and Spectrum Red Dot in Miami (USA). In March 2023, her artworks were exhibited at the Tokyo Tower Art Fair 2023.
