About this artwork
The painting is a confusing and bizarre scene, depicting a nude woman with hallowe'en face paint sitting on the ground, in front of a suspicious policeman. The policeman is holding a police tape which reads "crime scene, do not cross", and in front of the woman is a burger king sign - as if the policeman is the king. The background is a splatter of colors, making it difficult to determine where the scene is taking place. However, upon closer inspection,… one can see that it is set in a Chinese neighborhood in New York City.
The painting leaves much to the imagination, and one can only guess as to what has transpired. Did the policeman commit the crime? Or is he simply investigating it? And what about the nude woman - what role does she play in all of this? The painting raises more questions than it answers, but that is part of its appeal. It's a strange and enigmatic work that will continue to provoke and fascinate viewers for years to come.
« The paintings seem to aim for realism, but upon closer look we notice every deviation marked by the sharp contrast from one element to another. »
Marco Barberio is an established Italian painter who has exhibited his work internationally, including in Spain, Australia and the UK. Having cultivated a firm passion for art and creativity from a young age, he has worked as an art director as well as in web development and entrepreneurship alongside his artistic practice. Barberio's paintings primarily balance the dualism of realist forms and conceptual symbols, a style he describes as 'sampled realism.' His works ultimately offer each viewer the opportunity to contemplate the metaphors present in modern digital life, layering colors and curves to raise questions about loss, knowledge and reality.
