This painting is inspired by The Old Sea Bear, also known in Sweden as Fiskargubben, a motif from the late 1930s by German marine painter Harry Haerendel (1893–1982). Haerendel painted the subject several times and sold the image rights in 1940 to the German publisher Kunstanstalten May, which reproduced it in large editions. The image became especially popular in Sweden and is often associated with Gothenburg and the West Coast.
Through its widespread… distribution, Fiskargubben became an iconic image, known for its mass-produced paintings sold in public spaces. The identity of the figure has long been debated; while often believed to depict Dutch rescue captain Dorus Rijkers, Haerendel stated in a 1982 interview that the man was a fisherman named Captain Meyer.
This artwork is printed using pigment-based Giclée Fine Art printing on 210 gsm Hahnemühle Enhanced Fine Art Paper.
