About this artwork
The painterly structure is fragmentary and rhythmic. Short, almost engraving-like strokes cover the entire surface, leaving little room for moments of repose. The viewer’s gaze is compelled to move searchingly across the image, much like through dense undergrowth. The stag is recognizable, yet never fully clear—it seems to grow out of the structure and, at the same time, disappear into it.
The result is an image that depicts less a concrete scene… than a state of being: the intertwining of animal and environment, of body and space, of presence and dissolution. It can be read as a reflection on nature, but equally as an inner image—a landscape of memory, of instincts, or of vulnerability.
Maria Pia Lattanzi is a painter and draughtswoman from South Tyrol who studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and uses egg tempera as her preferred medium. In her work, she masterfully combines figurative, abstract, and ornamental elements, using delicate glazing techniques to create fascinating depths. Her paintings—often in series on animals and relationship themes—invite viewers to explore primal instincts, emotion, and the vulnerable side of humanity, and encourage honest introspection. www.pialattanzi.com
